Overview
Modern biology and anthropology have thoroughly refuted the concept of race as a biological distinction for the human species, Homo sapiens. In this assignment, you will read and summarize an article, look at the evidence rejecting human biological race, and discuss some of the many, many ways that race as a social construct impacts biology.
Task
This discussion requires two posts, each completed individually. You will be evaluating the credibility of an articles assigned by last name. Thus the first letter of your last name indicates what article you are assigned to read. For example, my last name is Garcia, and I would read “AABA Statement on Race and Racism III”. Below is the list of available articles (Note that bullets 1-3 are from the same document, just different sections of that document):
First Post Read your assigned article. Of course they are of all worth reading, but you should only write your post for this assignment based on your assigned article. Include the following:
Title your post with the name of your article as stated in the list above.
A 150-200 word response addressing the following:
Identify a “golden line” from the article: Choose a quote that stood out to you, explain why it was surprising, and reflect on how it connects to the historical misuse of biological race.
Consider the evidence: Reflect on the types of evidence used in the article to refute the concept of biological race. How does this evidence shape your understanding of the argument presented?
Compare definitions of race: How does the article’s definition of race compare to your prior understanding or to common misconceptions?
Note: You will NOT be able to see the replies of other people in your group until after you have posted your response.
Second Post (Due Sunday Night)
Choose 1 classmate’s post to respond to, preferably those that have not received a response yet. Read their summary and their original article and provide a substantial reply of about 100-150 words. In your response, consider the following aspects to provide constructive feedback and further the discussion:
Consider the historical misuse of biological race mentioned in your classmate’s response. How do you think this historical context influences contemporary discussions about race in science?
Identify a point made in your classmate’s post that you found particularly compelling or unclear. How can you expand on that point with additional examples or evidence from your understanding of the topic?
What other points or evidence from the original article did you find useful or interesting to better understand this topic, and why?
Is there anything you can suggest adding or modifying to the original post to make it more clear, have a stronger explanation, or provide additional/stronger evidence?
Ask for clarification by asking questions
