-The first sentence should take on just one or two ideas. Make it simple and about the largest concept that the article is working with. (read the article and list a few and then decide which seems appropriate. In this case, is it UN, ZN/CA Rights, or Indigenous Rights…)
The second sentence can be a little longer and should be narrowed down to greater specificity about the idea in the first sentence.
-The third sentence might be narrower or introduce a specific dilemma or issue that the paper discusses.
Let us focus on the first two ro three sentences of our paragraph, particularly for this week.
Things to avoid in the paragraph:
-Information that is distracting, even if true. So many people wrote that the Crow were originally from the Mississippi River area in their prior writing response. Not a big deal but unless the book is about geography, this might not be key and might be more distracting.
-Only rarely might a comma be helpful or appropriate in an opening sentence of a paragraph. You don’t want many things or concepts going on in this sentence. Why?
-Keep a look out for sentences that end one or two words from an “and”. Ask yourself if you need both concepts that are separated with an “and”. For instance, “I like to go out late and eat ice-cream and sweets.” What is wrong with this?
-Take a look for using “however” to start a sentence. It is generally fine but you might not need it as you may indicate a reversal of what was said before in another way. “However, I disagree” would be an example. Just “I disagree” would do enough.
