Scenario
In this assignment, you are tasked to be a representative on your healthcare organization’s Shared Governance Nursing Research Council. Shared governance is a nursing practice model designed to empower nurses to improve the quality of care within their healthcare organization. This Shared Governance Nursing Research Council will focus on reviewing, assessing, and disseminating research. For the next meeting, you have been assigned to evaluate a research study that includes a vulnerable population. You will present your findings in a brief oral presentation to the Shared Governance Nursing Research Council.
Directions
Find a research study in a current (less than five years) newspaper, online source, or a clinical practice research report that includes a vulnerable population. You may use one of the research articles from the project preparation assignments if you wish. Address the process of identifying ethical and equity-related aspects of your selected research study. Your final evaluation will be an oral presentation. You may optionally run a Bongo analysis for feedback on your presentation if you wish; see the “How To – Use Bongo Analysis” resource in Supporting Materials for instructions.
Specifically, you must address the following criteria in your oral presentation:
1. Chosen Research Study: Identify your chosen research study’s author or authors, title, and year of publication.
2. Vulnerable Population: Describe the vulnerable population in the research study and the importance of including them.
3. IRB Considerations: Discuss the specific IRB considerations that need to be addressed with this vulnerable population.
4. Rights and Well-Being: Assess whether appropriate measures were taken to protect the rights and well-being of this vulnerable population during the research study.
5. Strategies: Explain equity-related elements within the study. Include the following in your response:
A. Any populations that were excluded from the study (Consider the reasons behind these exclusions.)
B. Whether the research design, data collection, and analysis methods promote fairness and inclusivity
C. How the study results might impact different demographic groups
D. Potential disparities that need to be addressed
