All theories have a historical context. Understanding the historical context for psychoanalysis theory is important in understanding how the theory evolved, its key tenets and perspectives, and current applications of the theory. The development of a theory also often promotes discipline-wide criticism leading to the development of new theories. Many disagreed with Freud, which led to the development of neo-Freudianism theories in psychoanalysis. Understanding historical context is crucial for one’s ability to critically evaluate psychoanalytic foundational ideas and their influence on our understanding of the human experience.
