The Interview Activity/Paper is for each student to interview a child about a recent event that the child experienced and to try to elicit as much information as you can from the child about that event. Each student will present her/his experience by submitting a three-five paper outlining the experience.
Here are some guidelines.
1. You must interview a child under the age of 15. I recommend not interviewing a child under five because, as you all know, children under five are extremely difficult to interview. In all cases, please obtain the permission of the child’s caregiver before the interview.
2. You must interview the child about a recent, innocuous or pleasant event that the child experienced, such as going to a birthday party, participating in a sporting event or studying for a test.
3. Knowing what you know from the Modules, do your best to emulate an interview protocol. By that, I mean build rapport; gain some background information about the child/family; find out about the event by eliciting as many details as you can about the event and then bring the interview to respectful closure. Please remember to refer to the Best Practices paper from the Forensic Interview Protocols Module for assistance. Keep in mind that you should do your best to ask non-leading, non-suggestive questions and try to allow the child to exercise free-recall memory to the best of her ability.
4. Document your interview in an approximately three-page paper. Document some of the specific questions you asked and the specific answers the child responded with, however, please do not submit a full transcriipt and expect this to be the contents of the paper.
